Black Eyes

Are the bruising and swelling around the eye and the eyelid

What to look for

The bruising may last up to 10 days and changes colour from purple/blue to yellow within that time. Usually this type of bruise will heal right away however there are times when this bruising symbolizes a more serious injury especially if the eye is bloodshot. It could be possible that an eye injury of this type could involve a severed retina or lead to glaucoma. A fracture impair vision and surgery may be needed.

Causes

Most black eyes are caused by a strike and that causes the bleeding Underneath the skin, producing the characteristic blue-black Discoloration. A fractured skull can also cause a black eye. people with allergies can sometimes get black eyes (usually under the eye itself).

Dietary Considerations

Having a good balanced diet is very important eat plenty of protein, vitamins, minerals, and drink filtered water.

When to seek further professional advice

If both your eyes are black at the same time and if you find that your eyeball is hurting. If you have open cuts around the eye or inside the eye.  your vision is affected in any way; or if you see anything different such as spots etc.

Alternative/Natural Treatments

Herbal Remedies:  Camomile may help sooth the area.
Homeopathy: Arnica, Ledum, Symphytum, Hypericum are very useful for black eyes.

Traditional Treatment

The best would be to put an ice pack onto the area for about 10 minutes at a time which will help reduce the swelling and constrict the blood vessels. If you need to take a pain reliever do so to relieve any associated pain. Do not try to pry open the eye and try not to touch the area to much. If you think that the eyeball is obviously damaged or arched seek medical attention immediately.
