Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Possible Causes & Alternative Treatments

This is a condition that is characterized by an overwhelming and constant feeling of fatigue, also referred to as lethargy, listlessness, exhaustion and tiredness. It describes a constant state of physical and/or mental weakness and tiredness.

What to look for

Sore muscles, the recent start of extreme tiredness, sleeping disorder (insomnia or oversleeping), long-lasting discomfort following physical trouble, tiredness resulting not from any type of strain and that you can not relieve with sleep or rest. Paining in the joints. Suffering from frequent throat sore and headaches. Forgetfulness, inability to concentrate and confusion. Swollen lymph glands. Symptoms that continue for six months .

Almost anybody, like children, professionals and teenagers are afflicted with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). The people most afflicted is professional people. CFS has similar symptoms to flu and a sudden overwhelming fatigue and is not a result of physical exertion. This is not a fatal disease but it can last for a long time

Causes

So far there is no exact cause to CFS, but researchers are busy investigating the various possibilities.

Researchers think CFS develops when the virus enters the body and causes your immune system to not function properly. It can also occur when you are run down physically or emotionally, or when there is a change in your current environment. A combination of the three is also a possibility- however, genetics is not excluded from the list of possible causes.

Dietary Considerations

It’s very important to maintain a healthy diet. You must try to avoid caffeine, salt, fried foods, alcohol, beans, fish, white flour, refined sugar, high fat foods, whole grains, and eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. Add seaweeds, liquorice and shiitake mushrooms to your diet. By eating two cloves of garlic a day, your immune system can be boosted. There is some evidence that suggests that a combination of malic acid and magnesium may help relieve fatigue and muscle pain. There are other immune system-enhancing vitamins like vitamin C and beta carotene. Vitamins B5 and B6, manganese, selenium and chromium all play a role in strengthening your immune system as well. People who have this disorder may also have food allergies or sensitivities. This will show itself as an intolerance to a particular food. An allergic reaction to food that your body is now attacking can result in CFS like symptoms, because your body is now flooding your bloodstream with antibodies.

When to seek further professional advice

If you show any of the symptoms above, it is advisable that you seek a doctor.

With medicines and medications the flu like symptoms of CFS can be briefly reduced there are some chemicals that may also be contributing to CFS like pesticide, household cleaning products or another potential environmental toxins.
