Hernia

This is a swelling through a weakness in the abdominal wall. This can either be external or internal.

What to look for

If there is discomfort in the abdomen or groin when lifting or bending over.
If there is swelling in the groin or abdomen.
If you have a heavy feeling in the abdomen that is sometimes followed by constipation.

When a hernia happens it is because an organ or tissue has squeezes through a hole or a weak spot in a surrounding muscle. These are the most common types of hernia - inguinal, incisional and umbilical.
The most inguinal hernia happens to men because they have a natural weakness in there groin area. In an inguinal hernia, the intestine or the bladder pushes through the abdominal wall in the groin.
A incisional hernia develops then the muscles have not healed properly after an operation, it usually develops at the site of a operation.
Umbilical hernia is common in newborn babies, umbilical hernia is in the location near the naval. Umbilical hernia afflicts overweight women or those who has had to many children.

Causes

There are people that are born with this weakness and this makes them prone to develop hernia. This condition can also develop from heavy lifting, poor nutrition, overexertion, strenuous exercise, smoking and a persistent cough this can all weaken the muscles and make hernias develop.
A combination of muscle weakness and strain are the cause of all hernias: when a weak spot in the muscle tears under the pressure of strain, the internal organ or tissue the pushes there way through the tear.
A doctor can diagnose a hernia. And sometimes you can feel it yourself, on the side of the abdomen or groin

Lifestyle

By regular exercise it will help tone and strengthens stomach muscles but do not over do it "gentle exercise".

Prevention

By practicing good nutrition and maintaining a good muscle tone, and taking care not being overweight. You should also avoid putting unnecessary strain on your abdominal muscles through lifting

When to seek further professional advice

If you suspect that you may have a hernia.
If you know you have a hernia, and you are vomiting and nauseated and you are unable to pass gas or bowel movement.

Alternative/Natural Treatment

Natural therapies will not help to eliminate hernia therefore you should seek conventional treatment. however alternative treatments will relieve the discomfort.

Homoeopathy - you should take lycopdium clavatum three times a day for a few days if the hernia is on your right side of your body. And for general hernias, take 6C or Calcarea fluorate in tablet of liquid form.

Traditional Treatment

Within four years a baby with umbilical hernia can heal themselves this makes surgery unnecessary.
Normally surgery is required. It is very important not to leave your hernia untreated, because the protruding organ may be strangled (it has its blood supply cut off), and infection and tissue death may happen as a result of this.
