Night Terrors are when a child awakes abruptly, screaming.
What to look for
He or she is normally in a semiconscious condition and cannot be comforted. Gradually falling asleep again, the child does not remember it the next day.
Night Terrors usually begin between the ages of four and seven years and do not suggest any physical or mental problems. Unlike nightmares, they do not seem linked with 'scary stories' and are thought to be a temporary disturbance in the nervous system during sleep. They seem to run in families, and almost all children grow out of them within a few years.
When to seek further professional advice
If your child suffers from night terrors you should seek your doctors advice on how or what to do to solve this problem.
Colour therapy: Night terrors may be addressed environmentally by choosing the colour of the bedroom and bedclothes in soothing pastel pink, yellow or a gentle blue.
Aromatherapy: An aroma therapist will suggest rose or neroli essential oil used in a room pump dispenser in the child's room at night to soothe.
Other therapies include: Homeopathy, Alexander technique, Auricular therapy, Shiatsu, Autogenic Training, Bach Flower remedies and Acupuncture.
If the terrors are frequent, parents may keep a diary to see what time of the night they usually occur. Waking the child up ten minutes before they usually happen can stop the problem.
