Why we should be spiritual and not religious.

This may seem like a controversial topic but those who have moved from a religious following into a more spiritual way of life will be quick to agree the benefits that spirituality has over religion.

1. Spirituality is not rigid.

Unlike religion, spirituality allows you to experience freedom in the way in which you express yourself and the way that you choose to live your life without being judged. And as long as your life choices do not cause harm to either yourself or others, you are given the freedom to explore and experiment with different life experiences.

2. There is no fear of eternal damnation.

Those who follow a religion tend to base their morals and tendency to live in a way that is seen as ‘good’ according to their specific religious beliefs.  But is this because they are truly good and morally sound people who would behave in such a way regardless of religion, or is it out of fear of damnation or not getting access into heaven/paradise etc., once they die? Spiritual people choose to be good and moral of their own accord, and not out of fear.

3. Spirituality focuses more on “self”.

While religions focus solely on their specific deities and Gods, those who are spiritual focus more on exploring themselves and the spiritual possibilities around them. They are not confined to the walls of churches, mosques or synagogues and can practice their spirituality in various ways, perhaps through meditation, yoga, or even through travelling the world to discover who they are and where they fit in within the divine universe.
