The desire to live a happy life, free from fear, anxiety, and anguish is a motivating force for changing our lives. The commitment to end our suffering and to be happy results in the courage to change our lives and lead a more joyful existence, no matter what it takes.
I believe that we carry unresolved issues from our past with us in our present, and we develop unhealthy ways of coping with these unresolved issues. At times of stress, when we feel overwhelmed, these habitual ways of dealing with our issues become counterproductive and result in emotional pain and suffering. Often we feel ashamed and guilty about our behaviours, and it is a relief to be able to talk about what we are doing with someone who accepts us for who we are without judgment or criticism, and who can provide guidance on the journey ahead. I ensure that the therapeutic relationship is a safe space in which to work through issues by establishing clear boundaries and well articulated personal goals for therapy. The professional approach I use is a combination of psychodynamic and depth psychotherapy.
WHAT TO EXPECT - FIRST CONTACT
It is courageous to call a therapist and ask for help so I take the time to connect with whoever calls for an appointment. I ask a few questions and share a bit about myself and the approach I use. If I believe I am not the right therapeutic match, I will refer on to another psychologist who I do think will be a good match. Effective therapy occurs when there is a trusting relationship between therapist and client, and trust develops when there is both honesty and kindness, right from the first contact.
