Meet Jeneth Maharaja
In February 2023, shortly after an Ayahuasca ceremony and three months before my 40th birthday, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. They say life begins at 40, and I thought life was finally starting to get better. I was not ready for cancer.
Cancer changes everything.
It has been my greatest teacher and the most special gift from the Universe.
Most people express sympathy when they hear about it, but I don’t feel sad. I am living my best life, and I don’t look or feel sick. Every day alive is a blessing, and I enjoy interacting with people from all walks of life through my medicine work. This is where cancer survivors tap into the gratitude for this amazing gift of life we have and its ever-renewable potential. A softer, more spiritual side emerges when faced with a life-threatening disease.
I knew straight away that it was a cancer of the soul that had manifested in the physical body. It was the result of years of trauma that I had blocked out—suppressed emotions leading to this blockage in my heart chakra. My mum passed on when I was 10, and my dad passed when I was a baby. I did not know him or have a father figure in my life. My mum died very traumatically, and it was too much for 10-year-old me to process. She was my everything, and I loved her very much. After her passing, I gave up on life and didn’t want to be in this dimension any longer.
I knew from a young age that I was different and would never fit into a box. My mum’s sister (Mosie) raised me and molded me into the person I am. She was a pure soul, and I was a rebel kid who gave her a hard time. She taught me how to be humble, showed me love, and instilled spirituality in me.
I grew up in a gangster town and was exposed to things at a very young age. I had my first joint at 15 and tried alcohol early. Spirituality was my safety net, and I would often spend time in temples and churches. I was drawn to Krishna consciousness at the age of 13 and became a vegetarian. I did not have many friends in school or university and lived a life of solitude. I obtained a BCom degree and became an Accountant. My journey in corporate began in 2004, and I worked as an Accountant for 20 years in a stressful, toxic corporate environment.
I left Durban in 2012 to work for Bidvest in Gauteng. Mosie passed on in 2014, and it was totally unexpected. Things spiraled downward, and I started to find comfort in cannabis. It helped me overcome my anxiety and cope with life, stress, and people.
When COVID hit in 2020, we were working from home, and I started drinking excessively out of boredom and loneliness. The alcohol ban happened, and I found myself in a deep, dark pit. I had no support from friends or family and knew I needed help for my trauma. I discovered ibogaine, a substance found in the roots of the iboga plant, native to central Africa. Used for millennia during shamanistic rituals, ibogaine can reduce drug cravings, lessen withdrawal symptoms, and improve self-control. A single ibogaine treatment can reduce opioid withdrawal symptoms and achieve opioid cessation.
In August 2020, I checked myself into an ibogaine wellness center and received the treatment. I tried magic mushrooms and DMT for the first time and loved it. My spiritual awakening began, and the path opened up.
After being diagnosed with cancer, I delved deeper into plant medicine ceremonies. I participated in Kambo (the ultimate detox), San Pedro, Ayahuasca, DMT, iboga, and heroic doses of mushrooms, seeking guidance from the plant teachers on how to heal myself.
“To know thyself is the beginning of wisdom.” – Socrates
I am now preparing for a trip to the Amazon next week for a two-week Ayahuasca retreat with my shaman in the jungle. Master plants are known for their deep healing powers, the most powerful of which is Noya Rao. I will be dieting with Noya Rao, a master plant intended to maximize one’s healing and growth process. The master plant’s energy, intelligence, and presence settle and develop in the body, working in tandem with medicine ceremonies. This focuses on resolving deep core issues to heal and transform, as well as allow major perceptual shifts. I trust I will receive my healing from the cancer.
Two companies were birthed out of my cancer journey – Fantastic Fungi and Cannabis Cielo – born from my love of plant medicines, the impact they have had on my healing journey, and my desire to share this experience with others.
Fantastic Fungi began in May 2023, in the midst of my cancer journey. I realized the amazing power of both functional and medicinal mushrooms and their ability to help me heal. I started microdosing and making my own medicine. I love working with the frequency of mushrooms and their powerful ability to heal. My Lion’s Mane is a top seller, along with the microdosing range. I supply to stores in Cape Town, Gauteng, and KZN.
Cannabis Cielo was born out of my love for cannabis, a powerful plant teacher that has been with me from a very young age. Cielo is a feminine name with Spanish and Italian origins meaning “Sky” or “Heaven.” Whatever the weather, the name Cielo celebrates how this little ray of sunshine radiates warmth and joy.
Cannabis has an uplifting vibe and has helped me maintain a positive attitude throughout my cancer journey. It has allowed me to shine my light in the midst of adversity, and this medicine has been pivotal in my healing. Cannabis Cielo is a licensed provider operating under the Section 21 framework, assisting patients with valid approvals to access prescribed medical cannabis products. The goal is to make access to medicinal cannabis simple and easy for patients in South Africa. I assist patients with obtaining a medicinal patient card, which allows them to receive safe and effective treatment for their medical condition as prescribed by a registered medical practitioner. We are in the process of launching our online store to ensure safe and efficient online purchasing and delivery to our customers.
All of our efforts aim to remove the stigma and fear associated with the use of cannabis for medical purposes. People need to understand that cannabis is not a drug; it is medicine. Many of us have been using this medicine all our lives to treat anxiety, stress, depression, sleep disorders, and chronic pain. We shouldn’t have to hide or feel ashamed of it. I frequently attend events and festivals in both Gauteng and KZN, promoting the amazing benefits of mushrooms and cannabis.
I look forward to connecting with you on your journey!
