Dr Zara Valentine – Osteopath Session Review & Pain Relief Insights

Zara Valentine studied at the London School of Osteopathy and is one of only a handful of professionally trained osteopaths in South Africa, and one of only two practising in KwaZulu-Natal.

Having suffered from persistent back and neck pain for several years, which often developed into migraines, I decided it was time to seek a different approach. Following a thorough assessment, Zara explained that my hips were out of alignment, my pelvis was tilted, and poor posture had contributed to tightness in my diaphragm muscles. She guided me through a series of exercises designed to help restore balance to my pelvis and hips.

She also explained that my poor posture and muscle imbalance may have been placing strain on my vagus nerve—the longest cranial nerve in the body—which can be influenced by factors such as stress, fatigue, and muscle tension.

Throughout the treatment, Zara applied targeted pressure to specific muscles. Although some areas were tender, I experienced a surprising sense of relief. She combined this with deep breathing techniques, helping my muscles relax while improving my overall sense of movement and wellbeing.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the consultation was learning about referred pain—where discomfort is felt in a different area from its source. Zara explained that much of the pain I experienced in my neck actually originated from my lower back, combined with postural imbalance and muscle tension. She also demonstrated simple stretches and self-treatment techniques that I could continue at home.

Osteopathy takes a holistic approach to healthcare. Using gentle hands-on techniques including stretching, soft tissue manipulation, resistance, and joint mobilisation, treatment focuses on restoring the body’s natural movement, improving circulation and lymphatic flow, and supporting the body’s own healing processes.

Osteopathic treatment may assist people experiencing a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including back and neck pain, headaches, sciatica, joint pain, sports injuries, postural strain, and certain mobility-related concerns.

Immediately after my session I felt slightly light-headed, almost as though my body was adjusting to its new alignment. Zara also discussed the importance of nutrition, including vitamin D and its role in supporting healthy bones alongside calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus. She explained that sensible sun exposure, together with foods such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel, can help maintain healthy vitamin D levels.

I left the consultation thoroughly impressed by Zara’s knowledge, professionalism, and genuine passion for helping her patients. Her holistic approach, combined with practical advice and personalised treatment, made the session both educational and beneficial. I would happily recommend Dr Zara Valentine to anyone looking for a comprehensive, hands-on approach to improving their musculoskeletal health and overall wellbeing.
