TRE – Trauma Release Exercises
Susanne Thomas
Su came to visit us here at Body and Mind and offered me the opportunity to experience a TRE session for myself. Naturally, I was curious, so I made an appointment and headed off to her studio in Hillcrest, where Su first explained the concept behind TRE and what I could expect from the session.
She then gently guided me through a series of simple exercises designed to activate the body’s natural tremoring response. And then it happened – my body started shaking! Wow, what a strange experience! It felt like a controlled shaking response, yet I remained completely conscious and aware of what was happening.
Su explained that TRE can help the body release built-up tension and stress, creating a process of letting go. I found the experience fascinating because I could actually feel the physical response rather than simply thinking about stress or talking about it.
After three more sessions with Su, I found myself practising the exercises at home. TRE has given me a much deeper awareness of my physical body and a better understanding of how I personally respond to stress and emotional pressure.
What really intrigued me was the simplicity of the process. There was no complicated equipment, invasive treatment or need to explain everything verbally. I was able to work at my own pace and within my own comfort level, with Su guiding me throughout.
For me, TRE became another way of listening to my body and recognising that sometimes releasing tension can be a very physical process indeed. It has been an intriguing and empowering journey of greater body awareness, and one that I continue to explore.
